On May 8, 2008, Dave Sueper was driving to a business meeting when he was struck and killed by a distracted teenage driver who had run a red light. Scott Tibbitts, a chemical engineer and space entrepreneur who made motors for NASA, was the person Sueper was scheduled to meet that tragic morning, and he was deeply affected when he learned about the accident. Like Sueper, he was a father of two, and as an engineer he became fixated on finding a way to prevent another death from distracted driving...

Resolution On International School Safety Month
Association Of School Business Officials International
School Safety Handbook, 1986, page iv

WHEREAS, Accidents are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Accidents are the leading cause of death between the ages ofl and 38; and

WHEREAS, More children between the ages of 1 and 14 die from accidents than the leading diseases combined; and

WHEREAS, Between the ages of 15 and 24 more young people die from accidents than all other causes combined; and

WHEREAS, on June 28, 1982, The Environmental Protection Agency - Friable Asbestos - Containing Materials Schools Rule became effective; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that it shall be the goal of the Association of School Business Officials International to work diligently in complying with local, state and federal safety and health legislation; and be it further

RESOLVED, that safety education and accident prevention are important to everyone concerned with the Association of School Business Officials International, not only as a protective means during school hours but also as a constructive means of developing an appropriate mode of behavior to minimize accidents; and be it further

RESOLVED, that ASBO members take an active role in promoting a
greater awareness of sound principles of accidents and injury control; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Association of School Business Officials International does hereby proclaim the month of September as ASBO International School Safety Month.

Remembering a chlorine derailment
It doesn’t seem like eight years since I had a major run-in with a railcar of “skull and crossbones” material, but today was the day.  At that time I was a Federal On-Scene Coordinator (FOSC) with the U.S. EPA in Dallas, TX.  FOSCs are the lead for agency responses to oil and hazardous substance releases and have full authority to direct all public and private resources to stop or prevent a release.
